I have been searching for the best route and it appears that PhoneGap + Backbone.js + jQuery + Custom CSS3 UI is the most flexible. That said, I'm new to backbone.js, so I'm still a little bit lost. Have you posted any of you sample / test apps? This would be a great help!

Godspeed!

Re: Sencha Touch 2 and PhoneGap (aka Apache Callback) – getting started

Hi there thx for this given me a few suggestions

I do have one question in terms of phone gap and using a browser, how do you work with this especially with events efc? Do you use one of the shim libs ?

Re: Installing Debian Squeeze on your Buffalo Linkstation Live

I'm definitely going to try this. The old instructions for upgrading Etch to Squeeze don't seem to work, I think it's because the files are no longer in the repositories.

Re: Building a mobile web site *without* Sencha Touch 2: tools to consider

Wow, what a thorough response. My biggest problem is that karmaCRM's web based presence is already massive, so any changes I make need to be made section by section and done in tandem with my standard HTML/Rails powered site.

Ext.js is a huge change and I don't think I could have both running at once. As it stands everything I do on the web-app side needs to be duplicated and replicated in my mobile ST apps, therefore my apps are very behind.

In the coming years a streamlined mobile presence is going to be absolutely crucial, which is why I am constantly having this conversation with myself without finding the perfect "stack".

Re: Building a mobile web site *without* Sencha Touch 2: tools to consider

Hi John - I've been working on unrelated things for most of the time since writing this post, so don't have much of an update on my own use of these tools. However, a few thoughts:

1. ST2 is now out of beta, so is probably better/faster than when I tried it. It's quite different from ST1, though, so it's not a slam dunk easy upgrade path. If you are considering it, then have a look at the links in my related post.

2. I haven't looked at KarmaCRM yet but, from your comment, it sounds like you could benefit from taking the approach you've used for your mobile app, and extending it to the desktop. That way you can re-use HTML/JS across desktop/tablet/mobile, and never touch the Rails ERB templates. Alex MacCaw summarised this approach nicely on his blog.

3. Assuming you continue to use Rails as the back-end, but just to provide an API, you have various options for the front-end. The ones that immediately come to mind are:
i. Sencha Touch 2 for mobile, and Ext JS 4 for desktop (they share the same model and conventions, so you could re-use a lot of code;
ii. Backbone, for everything, but using CSS to target elements for different platforms (and re-flow where necessary). Hernán Schmidt (@lagartoflojo) said he's had good results using Twitter Bootstrap to provide styling for his mobile app. Take some time to read through the features for Bootstrap - the responsive grid and buttons in particular could help you.
iii. JQuery Mobile. I haven't played with it much, so don't have much to say about it. It provides both routing and candy, so you wouldn't need anything else for the mobile front-end. I don't know whether you can re-use the router/controller code for your desktop site.

Re: Building a mobile web site *without* Sencha Touch 2: tools to consider

I also very much appreciated this post. I'd love to hear where you're at now? I have gone down the Sencha touch route for my CRM app - www.karmacrm.com but am not quite sure it is "THE" solution. Reusable codebase is also a huge deal for me too, and right now, I have my Sencha touch app, and my standalone rails app. The more coding I do on the rails app, the more I have to Mirror on ST, not to mention upgrade my app to ST2.

Do you do any freelance work? I'd be interested in hearing how your attempt to make streamlined mobile apps without ST is going, and if you might consider helping me figure out how to consolidate my web app and mobile presence so I can rely on a unified codebase.

Either way nice post and I am glad I'm not alone in this quest!

Re: Building a mobile web site *without* Sencha Touch 2: tools to consider

I wasn't aware Backbone had any inbuilt ui elements? Yes only being available for 5.1 is a mishap on my side this was my first consumer focust iPhone app something I will be sorting out soon! for version 2 im going to be implementing a lot more features and also releasing an android version.

Re: Building a mobile web site *without* Sencha Touch 2: tools to consider

Regarding styling, I found the only solution to truly mimic the iphone interface was ST2. If you don't need the tab bar at the bottom, you can use Backbone or Spine.

I'm curious - why did you choose to restrict your app to iOS 5.1? I was going to install it, but I use OpenVPN, so can't upgrade to 5.1 just yet.

Re: Building a mobile web site *without* Sencha Touch 2: tools to consider

awesome set up I creanted my first phonegap app using jQuerymobile and PhoneGap which can be found at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app... what did you decide to go with on the style side?

Re: Building a mobile web site *without* Sencha Touch 2: tools to consider

Man, I liked your post a lot. I've been researching a bit as well and reading about each of the options (Sencha vs jQuery Mobile) and I have in mind a similar arquitecture than yours.

It was good to sanity check that what I have in mind make sense ;) !

Re: Installing Debian Squeeze on your Buffalo Linkstation Live

Yes, it includes putting the firmware on the box. I downloaded the firmware for my device (HS-DH320GL) but then replaced two of the files with those downloaded from the Debian site (uImage.buffalo and initrd.buffalo). The firmware file was called HS_DHGL_2.10.zip

Re: Installing Debian Squeeze on your Buffalo Linkstation Live

Quick question, you say follow the instruction to recover a bricked Linkstation, does this include the putting firmware on the box part ? if so which firmware did you put on the box ?

Re: Installing Debian Squeeze on your Buffalo Linkstation Live

Awesome, thanks!
